People with learning disabilities partying for their rights

The Mission

Stay Up Late is a grassroots charity that enables adults with learning disabilities and autistic people to lead active social lives and make decisions about how they want to live their life.

#NoBedtimes

Welcome to Stay Up Late

We work to tackle social isolation and push back against restrictive social care practices.

We do this by campaigning for change and running projects that support people to build real friendships through shared experiences like going to gigs and taking part in mainstream events.

We Campaign To:

End inflexible support for people with learning disabilities.
Make partying for people with learning disabilities a normal thing to do.
Make sure everyone gets to live a gloriously ordinary life.

What People Say:

"It’s been a very long time since I've had someone I can call a brother, my Gig Buddy has changed my life and he makes me very happy."
Our buddy Michael
Since being matched with buddy Graeme, Michael has been fully inducted into Brighton's local live music scene.
"I continue to greatly enjoy being a gig buddy volunteer two years in. I have developed a great friendship with my buddy and a network of others. It makes me realise the barriers that are in place."
Our volunteer buddy Fran
Volunteering can be a great way to meet new people!
"Me and my buddy got on stage and danced. Then I won a prize, it was awesome!"
Our buddy Suzy
These buddies took part in a drag show where the performers asked if any one wanted to give it a go and they didn't hold back.
"When I'm at a gig I don't feel disabled, I just feel like me. Music makes us all equal, we're all just the same really and at a gig we're there for the same reason, for the music. We're just people who love music."
Our buddy Neil
Buddies who love to frequent many gigs of varying types together.
"Thank you for pairing me with my buddy. Today has been awesome because of her, we just get on so well and she 'gets' me. Honestly, I mean it, thank you. Lately I've been struggling a lot and this has been the best day for my mental health, it has been exactly what I needed."
Our buddy Anne
Buddies who have formed meaningful friendships whilst going out together.
"I think the work that the charity does is incredible and should be recognised. There is not enough support for adults with additional needs and I’m proud to be a volunteer."
Our volunteer buddy Pete
Volunteering can be rewarding whilst making a big difference to somebody's life.
"The best thing about Gig Buddies for me, is my buddy Terry. We're such good mates and have been matched for over six years, I go to his house for dinner with his family and we go to see horror movies at the cinema. He's the best buddy, he's great."
Our buddy Tim
Long-time Gig Buddies still having a great time together!

Our Work

The Stay Up Late Campaign

PEOPLE WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES FIGHTING FOR THE RIGHT TO PARTY

This is where our charity started and we’re developing more ways for more people with learning disabilities to fight for their right to party!

Gig Buddies & Sports Buddies

Gig Buddies and Sports Buddies are projects that pair up volunteers with people with learning disabilities and/or autistic people in Sussex to be friends and to attend events together.

Set Up Your Own Gig Buddies

This is how we share our Gig Buddies project with other organisations that want to replicate our work.

Our goal is for as many people with learning disabilities and/or autistic people as possible to lead full and active social lives. Partnering with like-minded organisations who share our values is the most effective way to make that happen.
