Grassroots charity promoting the right for people with learning disabilities to have a choice about how they live their lives

Projects - Wild Things

Wild Things started off as an idea by Heavy Load (who also founded Stay Up Late). They’d just been the subjects of the award winning feature documentary ‘Heavy Load’ and people were getting in touch saying how radical it was for people with learning disabilities to be making music. Heavy Load knew of loads of bands like them so they decided to use their new found fame to try and showcase some of the great music being made, and released Wild Things Vol. 1.

Then some bands from the USA got in touch and the mission became to showcase international acts – which resulted in the double album Wild Things 2, and Heavy Load also handed over the work of releasing the albums to Stay Up Late and as a way of helping to promote Stay Up Late’s work.

The release of Wild Things 3 used the London Olympic and Paralympic Games as inspiration, with the mission being to find acts from each Olympic ‘Ring’ area. The previous albums had not featured any acts from Asian or African countries but we knew they had to be out there, because music is such a universal way of communicating. After a lot of research and internet searching we achieved our mission. The resulting album features 42 acts from 13 countries and 5 continents. It has also been awarded the Inspire Mark by the organisers of the London 2012 Games.

The release also features an online ‘World Music Festival’ illustrated by Michael Smith and the album artwork was provided by The Rockets Artists from Brighton.

Happy listening – and get in touch if you want to be involved in future releases.
