SXSW Sydney 2023 – vote for our pitch

For the first time, the famous and probably most incredible music and film festival in the world is happening outside of Austin, Texas. It’s taking place in Sydney, Australia, which also happens to be the home of one of the Gig Buddies projects.

SXSW has an important place in our hearts as a charity, as it was in Austin in 2008 that the Heavy Load movie premiered to a great reception.

The film, amongst other things, showed how the punk band got fed up seeing their fans going home early. As three of the band also had learning disabilities, members found inflexible staffing was impacting their lives too.

So we’d love to use the opportunity of SXSW Sydney as a way to bring the story full circle, how that premier in Austin gave birth to our charity, which in turn created the Gig Buddies project and how our sharing that in Sydney has enabled hundreds of people with learning disabilities in the city to have great social lives and develop new friendships.

Our pitch to SXSW Sydney

We want to present a session with Sydney buddies to show how Gig Buddies is a radically simple solution to inclusion and preventing loneliness.
