Bollocks to Blue Monday

Bollocks to Blue Monday

“YOU’RE TALKING BOLLOCKS MATE!”

People will tell you that today, Monday 16th January, is Blue Monday because it’s officially the day that people feel the most depressed. You can confidently say to them, “you’re talking bollocks, mate!”.

The idea of Blue Monday started as a marketing ploy created in 2005 by a well-known holiday company that came up with the idea to sell their holidays. They thought using poor mental health would be a great way of making money. That in itself is enough to say bollocks to.

It’s not science

Their claim is they used some sort of ‘equation’ that actual scientists have debunked as complete nonsense. Even Cliff Arnall, the academic who put his name to ‘Blue Monday’, campaigns against it these days.

Poor mental health affects people all year round, not just one day a year. It shouldn’t be trivialised by businesses trying to make a quick profit. With the cost of living crisis we face more financial pressures. The last thing we need to do is a bit of retail therapy for a quick dopamine hit. All that leads to is more debt and more worry.

Poor mental health is a year-round issue

A huge contributor to poor mental health is loneliness. That’s what we need to address as a country and what we’re doing as a charity for people with learning disabilities through our Gig Buddies project.
