“After Covid people with learning disabilities will need support to feel more independent”

#NoBedtimes Blog by Jason O’Neill

Jason O’Neill is an Ambassador for Stay Up Late and part of our quality checking team. In this blog he talks about why our #NoBedtimes campaign will be so important when venues reopen. Jason argues that people with a disability must be given the support they need to go out, stay up late and have fun – and that we don’t see a return to the bad old days of institutionalised care.

“After Covid people with learning disabilities will need support to feel more independent”

Well you see, I think we need to still  campaign for #NoBedtimes. Because I really think it’s important that people with a disability or with a learning disability in supported living or a residential home don’t go back to the old days and lots of rules.

I think we need to help people with a disability or a learning disability to stay up late and go to gigs. For example, going to a pub or a music concert to have fun, just like other people do.

The campaign #NoBedtimes will help support workers to encourage people with a disability or a learning disability – and hopefully support them to stay up late and stay safe at the same time.

People who are living in residential homes might not be comfortable going out for the first time for over a year after COVID. To make this happen I think they need to get support to feel more independent. You don’t want them to feel less independent.

Some people with a disability or learning disability might feel worried or uncomfortable using public transport on their own or even be nervous about the crowds and they might need extra support with the things they enjoy doing.

So you see, people with a disability or learning disability should have a chance to be more independent and have extra support if they need it and be valued for who they are.
