The Advocacy Project work with Adults with a Learning Disability in Westminster, Camden and The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. Before Christmas they asked their members what they did on a Saturday night. Here are some of their comments:
“On Saturdays I feel bored. I want to go out but it depends how many staff there are. I couldn’t go to Rock the Boat.”
“I’m going to a Christmas party”
“I went to a Christmas disco in Hammersmith. I don’t do much on Saturdays, maybe watch tv.”
“I eat in at home on Saturdays. I used to play darts & pool in the Elephant & Castle pub. I like a pint. I went on my own. I always watch the football on tv on Saturday night and sing along to the X Factor!”
“we visit friends. We went to Luke’s work Christmas party. We watch QPR football on Saturdays.”
“I would like to go bowling, or to the theatre or a concert.”
“Sometimes I stay at home on Saturdays or sometimes see friends. I would like to go out for a drink with friends or to see films.”
They wanted me to let you know what they had said. They want us to put info about nights out on our website.
The Advocacy Project
So there’s some good news but we reckon also a lot of room for improvement.
Thanks to the Advocacy Project for letting us know about this.
Do you have a story to tell about Staying Up Late, or not being able too?
Please let us know. It would be good to start a debate going.
Look forward to hearing from you
Paul

We’ve had a quiet couple of months but will be back in action very soon. In the meantime here’s a poem about punk:
Punk’s about saying “Smash the System!”
Punk’s not a fashion, it’s a feeling
It’s not a way of life, it’s a believing
Punk’s for three cord wonders
Who care’s if it’s full of blunders?
Punk is “Do they owe us a living?”
Punk’s not down to wearing black
Or the Sex Pistols come back
Punk’s not some musical history
Or a long lost staircase mystery
One thing is for sure,
Punk’s not dead,
Or hidden away obscure,
Safety pins, button badges, ripped up jeans
Shouting out lyrics obscene
Ransom note lettering,
No to the dust settling
Punk’s about saying “Smash the System!”
Punk’s not a fashion, it’s a feeling
It’s jumping up and down to touch the ceiling
It’s all about an attitude
On a musicial latitude
(David Sharman)

Here’s a review of the Wild Things 2 album by Colin Hambrook at Disability Arts Online. The album would make the perfect stocking filler but you’ll have to be quick.
‘The music ranges from the tight blues of the irrepressible JC-Jammer with his Dump Truck Baby, to the maddening Mulberry Leemore Music Groups ‘Telescopic Handler.’ They’ve had me humming the refrain “Ed really likes the gear box”…for weeks now. Kylie Minogue eat your heart out!’
All proceeds go towards furthering the Stay Up Late campaign.

Christmas Stingray Nightclub Special
At the New Venue…OX1 Lounge, Jam Factory, Park End Street, Oxford
Tuesday 15th December – 7 – 11pm
£7.00 on the door including food and Christmas Stingray Fun
We may have all heard about the sad news about the Stingray Club Crisis early this month as members of the Stingray Club team and My Life My Choice, put out their plea for help having lost their original venue at Bar Risa?
Now we have the fantastic news that not only have they found a new venue but they intend to celebrate with a bumper Christmas Club night on Tuesday 15th December, which brings an early Christmas present to hundreds of people with learning disabilities in Oxfordshire.
From right under their noses at the Jam Factory where My Life My Choice offices are based, OX1 Lounge Promotions Manager Jake Parker heard the SOS and sought to see what he could do.
“I met the Stingray team and was immediately impressed with their enthusiasm and commitment to making Stingray happen somewhere in Oxford as soon as possible,” said Jake, “I was keen to make this a great Christmas for all those who go to the Stingray Club; I think it’s going to be a fantastic Christmas night on the 15th December.”
The Stingray team keenly added that they will be letting their 400 strong mailing list know about the great news and can’t wait to work with their new partners at the OX1 Lounge.
“This has made my Christmas,” said Paul Scarrott Stingray’s DJ trainer, “There are a few things to iron out at the venue but we’re positive we’ve found the right people and nightclub to work with.”
“Let’s make it a special night to remember. Happy Christmas Stingray,” added Andy Law, another Stingray team member.
Please contact us at the My Life My Choice office for more details, or email office@mylifemychoice.org.uk or check out our page on the My Life My Choice website www.mylifemychoice.org.uk
